Šime Perić
Antofagasta (Chile), 10 March 1920 – Zagreb, 14 August 2019
Academic painter Šime Perić studied wall painting at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, and graduated in 1952 from the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade. In 1952 - 1957, he was an associate of the Master Workshop of Krsto Hegedušić. He has been a member of the group "Mart" since 1957. Since 1969 he has been a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He makes graphics, illustrates books and copies medieval frescoes.
Around 1955, the beginnings of abstraction can be seen, and in the following years he forms a pure visual language full of spots and random rhythms. At first he painted intimate scenes with deep color layers, then he turned to informality. Elaborating on previous artistic experiences, since the beginning of the 1970s he has been busy painting circular elastic forms with strong chromatic expressiveness. Since 1985, he has been creating imaginative rhythmic sculptures from often colored wood. He received the Vladimir Nazor Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.
