Pavle Vojković
Varaždin, 24 June 1912 – Varaždin, 26 December 2006
Academic painter Pavle Vojković finished primary and secondary school in Varaždin, and continued his further education in 1934 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of Marino Tartaglia. In 1939, after graduating, he studied in Paris until the beginning of the II. World War. He is one of the most prominent painters, scenographers and costume designers who lived in Varaždin. He created a significant oeuvre in the techniques of oil on canvas, pastel, watercolor, drawing, graphics, sculptures and public sculptures. He worked on artistic solutions for numerous religious buildings. His work follows several developmental stages. The first period was marked by the Academy, where the painter caught the basic guidelines of Marino Tartaglia (1936-1942). These works show a special sensitivity to the study of color, but also the acceptance of Cézanneism. The very common motif of the landscape in this period will continue to be the most common theme of the painter's work. After his stay in Paris, the painter decided to try his hand at solving forms in cubism (1940-1942). The works created in those years belong to his "engaged" painting moment. They are imbued with simple cubist chromaticism of quality interpretation, which makes them among the works of anthological importance (Actress, 1940). Most of the works created a few years later are associated with the cycle of returning to intimacy (1954-1960). That period is marked by azure smears of color with almost pastel chromatic relations, which corresponds to the intimate theme of the work. At the beginning of the 60s, he tried his hand at abstraction with works reduced in form and color, while in the 80s he worked in the sphere of tone and color, insisting on the area of structure. The colors have a complex register and are finely developed tonally.
