Hinko Juhn
Podgorač, 9 June 1891 – Zagreb, 5 September 1940
The Croatian sculptor and ceramist Hinko Juhn graduated from the Craft School in 1907, in 1911 he graduated in sculpture from the Higher School of Arts and Crafts under Robert Frangeš Mihanović in Zagreb, and in 1912 he continued his education at the International Academy in Florence. He began studying ceramics in 1918 at the Czech Vocational Ceramics School in Bechynĕ and at the Vocational School for Ceramics and Crafts in Teplice and continued at the schools for crafts in Dresden and Vienna (M. Powolny). As our first trained ceramist, he returned to Zagreb in 1921, when he was appointed assistant teacher for ceramics at the College of Arts and Crafts. In 1924, he was transferred to the Vocational School, where he was an expert until 1929, then a subject teacher of ceramics for the rest of his life. He created sculpture using ceramic techniques (majolica, faience, porcelain) in traditional sculptural materials (terracotta, plaster, bronze, stone and wood), while the main theme of his work is the human figure, especially the female nude.
The first, graceful sculptures bear the characteristics of Art Nouveau stylization and the Italian Renaissance, and some of them also show the influence of Viennese Expressionism. After his return from Central Europe, he expanded the scale of motifs, following the example of Meissen porcelain production, he introduced characters from the commedia dell'arte into his work, and under the strong influence of Powolny and ceramic works from the Viennese art workshops (Wiener Werkstätte), allegorical and mythological motifs and folklore themes. During the 1930s, he mainly made intimate sculpture in traditional sculptural materials, and limited ceramic techniques to utilitarian objects. He creates a series of female figures larger in form and proportions, as well as portrait sculpture with accentuated realistic features and precise psychological characterization.
