A Croatian painter and graphic artist. He studied painting and graphic art under Bela Čikoš Sesija and Menci Clement Crnčić in Zagreb. He attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1902 to 1905 in Vienna under F. Myrbach and studied graphics at the Academy in Vienna under William Unger from 1905 to 1908. where he came into contact with the artistic and literary avant-garde, which represented resistance to academism alongside with Secession. From 1912 he taught at the Craft School, and from 1922 he was a full professor of graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He is considered to be the founder of modern Croatian graphics alongside Menci Clement Crnčić.
He painted still lifes, portraits and landscapes in oil, aquarelle and tempera. The most significant is his graphic work, recognisible by wide surface of color and firm drawing and rhytmical switches of dark and light areas with occasionally accentuated details. He often emphasized the sharp lines and sharply cut silhouettes of the characters. By combining secessionist and folk ornamentation, he tried to reform our artistic craft. In the spirit of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, he furnished and illustrated books and magazines, made designs for diplomas, plaques, catalogs, posters, porcelain and glass; he worked on scenography and costume design for dramatic and opera works.
