Split, 24 December 1870 – Split, 1 June 1953
The painter Emanuel Vidović received his first painting training from the Split painter and constructor Emil Vecchietti. In 1887, he was accepted to the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. From 1892 to 1895, Vidović lived, painted and held exhibitions in Milan. Afterwards, he returned to Split, frequently leaving to paint in Chioggia in the period up to 1913. Vidović was one of the founders of the Medulić Association in 1908. With the exception of a short sabbatical in Prague in 1923, he lived and worked in his home town. From 1922 and 1924, Vidović was a corresponding member of the Serbian and Yugoslav Academy respectively.
Initially inspired by the tradition of Venetian painting and the divisionist technique of G. Segantini, Vidović made numerous vedutas of the Venetian channels and lagoons that range from open coloristic landscape studies to lyric sundown atmospheres. After Venice, he returned to Split to create studies and sketches by taking in direct impressions from the natural surroundings.
